1.  What do rating numbers mean?
The U.S. government requires an efficiency rating of all air conditioning and heating equipment. The rating reflects the percentage of energy used efficiently, with a high rating indicating high-efficiency.

2.  WHAT IS A SEER?

There are special names for the efficiency rating of various types of equipment.  Air conditioning equipment is rated by the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratting or SEER.  The hight the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit.

3.  WHAT DOES HSPF STAND FOR?

There are special names for the efficiency rating of varying types of equipment.  Heat pump equipment in the heating mode is rated by the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor, or HSPF.  The higher the HSPF rating,  the more efficient the unit.

4.  HOW CAN I BE SURE MY UNIT IS THE RIGHT SIZE?

Obviously, an air conditioner that is too small will not keep your home sufficiently cool.  But what many don't realize is that an oversized system will cycle (turn on and off) more than necessary, wasting expensive energy and possibly putting undue strain on the compressor.  Alaskan Quality can determine the optimum size for your home and/or business by making a careful study of your cooling requirements.  Window dimensions and exposure,  floor space, insulation and local climate,  heat-generating appliances,  the direction your home faces and even the amount of your home's exterior shade by trees all factor in to determining the optimum size for your home and/or business.

5.  WHAT DOES AFUE STAND FOR?

Thers are special names for the efficiency ratings of various types of equipment.  Gas furnaces are rated according to their Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency or AFUE.  The higher the AFUE rating,  the more efficient the unit.

6.  SHOULD OUTDOOR UNITS BE COVERED IN THE WINTER?

Not usually.  Air conditioners that operate seasonally are built to withstand an outdoor enviornment and do not need to be covered.

7.  CAN SHRUBS OR FLOWERS BE PLANTED AROUND AN OUTDOOR UNIT?

Yes.  However,  we recommend that plants be no closer than 19 inches to the unit.  This allows for plenty of room for air circulation in and out of the unit.  Without this room for air circulation,  the unit could overheat,  resulting in a premature need for service.

8.  HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SIZE UNIT OUR HOUSE OR BUSNIESS NEEDS?

9.  WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SPLIT SYSTEM AND A PACKAGE UNIT?

A split system used indoor and outdoor components to provide a complete home comfort system.  A package unit or self-contained unit requires no external coils, air handlers or heating units.
